Millions of People Given Greater Choices for Work in
SSA's Ticket to Work Program |
| The Ticket to Work
and Self-Sufficiency Program is the cornerstone of the Ticket to Work
and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 and a key component of
President Bush's New Freedom Initiative. The goal of the Ticket Program
is to give disability beneficiaries the opportunity to achieve steady,
long-term employment by providing them greater choices and opportunities
to go to work if they choose to do so. The legislation also removes
barriers that previously influenced people's choices between healthcare
coverage and work. Under this Program, Social Security beneficiaries
with disabilities may obtain employment, vocational rehabilitation (VR)
or other support services from public and private organizations called
Employment Networks. These Employment Networks can receive a dollar
value for up to five years for every eligible individual for whom they
provide jobs and/or services (or service coordination) as long as that
individual is employed and remains employed according to the Program
requirements.
