PerspectivesMilton Wilkins:
VCU Administrative Systems
"My job is to maintain the 5 kiosk computers on the Virginia Commonwealth
University's academic and medical campuses," stated Milton Wilkins. For the
past two years, Milton has been working for VCU's Administrative Systems. This
is the first job he has held since his spinal cord injury.
When Milton first started his job, he was responsible for going to each kiosk
and refilling the paper supply, as well as cleaning the entire machine. Over
time, Milton's responsibilities have increased greatly. In addition to refilling
the paper supply and cleaning the machines, he now checks for technical
problems, fixes those that he is able to, calls the supplier if the problem is
beyond his ability, orders supplies, and keeps his coworkers aware of any issues
that arise.
"My job gives me the feeling of independence. My supervisor and coworkers
support me. They understand my injury, but more importantly they understand that
I need to be independent. They take time to teach me new things so that I can
become even more independent at work." Milton says that his job has given
him the ability to be more financially independent and responsible. This year he
was able to help his son go to the prom and participate in various senior year
activities. "I love my job. I wouldn't trade it for the world."
