9/16/09 Chatlog Question: My question relates to IDA's... I've been following them for years and there just doesn't seem to be a way to get access in my area. Do participants have to be hooked up to Vocational rehabilitation or an economic self sufficiency program of some kind? Answer:: Every year there are new IDA providers that are selected by the office of Community Services that manages the Assets for Independence program. I Would urge you to take a look at www.idanetwork.org to see who the IDA providers are in your state & contact. You do not need to be a VR client to be eligible for an IDA or be a part of a family self sufficiency program. Question: I am on their listserv... but none in my area Answer: Look to see whether there is a family self sufficiency program with your local public housing authority. Question: So, you are saying that we can use all of these resources at the same time to start a business? Sounds overwhelming. How do I get all of the partners to work together? It seems that if you are using one resource, they say you don't need to use them. Answer: It is a challenge but I would urge you to talk with your primary source of funds & or a benefits planner to help you explore the braiding of the multiple options. Question: Wonder how the stuff that is going on with the Federal Reserve and new administration will effect these programs Answer: I'm optimistic that legislation pending will greatly expand the IDA program nationwide I don't expect this legislation to be considered by Congress until 2010 I also believe the Obama admin is very sensitive to helping low income workers and families have access to new tools and strategies . talk to your members of congress about support for the ABLE act (see the ppt slides) Question: I may try the local CENTERS FOR INDEPENDENCE. Thanks for information. these are very valuable sessions. Answer: Great thank you. I will be glad to respond to your questions thru my email at, MMorris@ndi-inc.org
