Audrey Yesterday's Restaurant was established in August of 1993. As the first year of business ended, owner Robert Marshall found he was having trouble finding a dishwasher that would show up for work consistently. When he ran an advertisement in the local paper, a supported employment agency contacted him and asked if he would like to meet a qualified applicant. Mr. Marshall did not have any experience working with individuals with disabilities, but was open to the idea. He met the applicant (Harold) and hired him. Harold has been working with Mr. Marshall for five years now.

"I needed someone who would show up everyday and really wanted to work. Dishwashing is a hard job. We were having a lot of turnover. Harold is dependable and is always ready to work." In the past five years, Mr. Marshall has hired two more individuals with disabilities. He received an award in 1995 for his hiring practices and says he will continue to staff his restaurant with this untapped labor pool.

"I think other businesses should seriously consider individuals with disabilities when hiring. Many businesses believe that it will increase their insurance premiums, but it doesn't. I have found that my employees with disabilities are much more reliable and dedicated than others."
