What about Medical Benefits for individuals on SSDI?

Right about now you are probably asking yourself, well what about medical benefits? I thought that when you were on SSDI you got medical benefits too. Well, lets talk about that for a minute. Medicare provides medical insurance coverage to SSDI beneficiaries. There are waiting periods associated with Medicare. For instance, individuals with disabilities must complete a 5 month waiting period from the month of disability onset before SSDI benefits begin. They must wait an additional 24 months after their cash benefits begin before they are entitled to receive Medicare coverage. There are many, many in’s and out’s related to Medicare …what’s covered and what isn’t. I think it is important for you to know that due to changes from the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act, Medicare is extended for most SSDI beneficiaries who work. They will get an a total of 8 and a half years of Medicare coverage which includes their Trial Work Period.
