Enhancing the Schooling of Students with Traumatic Brain Injury

Here are some startling facts about traumatic brain injury (TBI):

• More than 1 million U.S. children are identified each year with TBI.
• TBI is the most common cause of death and disability of children in the United States.
• Between 9% and 38% of students with TBI are referred to special education.

Many teachers, in both general and special education, may discover that one or more of their students has suffered from brain injury (see box, "What Does the Literature Say?"). This article explores how to identify these students, where the best placements might be, and what teaching strategies are effective. For example, one of the important considerations is how soon a child or youngster with TBI should return to school.
