Supported Employment: The Challenges of New Staff Recruitment, Selection and Retention

Unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities has remained in the 60-70 percent range for decades despite increased innovations in vocational rehabilitation practices and recent legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act (P.L. 101-336). A frequently cited poll by Harris and Associates (1994), presents a rather discouraging view of work outcomes for persons with disabilities. Harris and Associates found that two-thirds of Americans with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 64 are unemployed. Among those employed, only 20 percent were working full time, and 11 percent were working part time. They also found that 84 percent of unemployed people with disabilities wanted to work. Given current advancements in rehabilitation and the fact that most persons with disabilities want to work, it becomes necessary to determine rehabilitation approaches that have successfully promoted employment for individuals with disabilities.
