Return to work for persons with severe traumatic brain injury: a data-based approach to program development

Reviews the literature and selected clinical data on return to work (RTW) for persons with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and suggests vocational programming guidelines to achieve RTW for individuals with TBI. The first part reviews research on RTW outcomes for persons with TBI, including the reported rates of RTW and the factors found to influence RTW such as injury severity, preinjury variables, and postinjury services. The second part describes the outcomes of a supported employment program that has focused almost exclusively on clients with severe TBI. The outcomes of 87 clients served in this program are presented using a variety of methods that have emerged for defining and measuring RTW. The final section suggests programming guidelines to promote RTW for individuals with severe TBI.
