Facts and Tips for Improving Access

Before arranging a meeting it is helpful to keep the following points in mind:
- If there are potential access issues, notify the person in advance and discuss options.
- Check that there are ample parking arrangements and provide directions if necessary.
- Alert your receptionist to provide assistance if necessary.
- If accessible options are not visible have receptionist provide directions to elevators, restrooms, etc.
- Advertise event accessibility, this may increase the number of people with disabilities who might attend.
- Ask participants to identify accommodation request, prior to the day of the meeting. This will give you an opportunity to prepare.
- Select a meeting room that individuals who are blind or use a wheelchair are able to maneuver around easily.
- Arrange tables and chairs in the meeting space to accommodate people with disabilities throughout the meeting space. Do not assume that people with disabilities want to sit in the back of the room.
