As rehabilitation professionals, we make dozens of decisions each day that greatly impact the lives of our customers. The guiding principles by which we make those decisions and take action are based on our professional ethical framework. Our ethical framework directs us throughout our practice in regards to the provider-customer relationship, confidentiality, relationships with other professionals, evaluation and assessment, teaching and supervision, using technology, business practices, and much more.
In this course we will explore the professional ethics that guide us as rehabilitation professionals as we work with our customers, individuals with disabilities and employers. This course uses the newly revised Code of Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors developed by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) as the guiding source of the ethical framework for the profession.
Topics covered in the course are:
- Overview of Ethics - overview of ethics including theoretical framework; definitions of ethics, values, and morals; and different theories of ethics; and a brief overview of ethical principles
- Scope of Practice - overview of the CRCC scope of practice; ethical principles and practices; rehabilitation counseling values; and the code of ethics
- Ethical Climates & Dilemmas - ethical climates; ethical dilemmas; possible ethical dilemmas; unethical behaviors; and an ethical dilemma example
- Decision Making - decision making process; making ethical decisions; consideration of multiculturalism and diversity; and legal implications
- Cultural Competence & Multiculturalism - further exploration on what it means to be culturally competent in rehabilitation counseling practice and review of how and why to consider multiculturalism in ethical decision making
