Upcoming ACRE Certified Web Courses

The Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators (ACRE) awards nationally recognized Certificates of Achievement to providers of employment services to people with disabilities. This Certificate documents that the provider has satisfactorily completed a minimum of 40 hours of training or professional development provided by an ACRE-approved training resource.

Virginia Commonwealth University is a member of ACRE and the Supported Employment Online Certificate Series is a recognized training program. Individuals who complete all of the requirements for VCU's online courses in supported employment will be eligible to receive a National Certificate in Employment Services. Supported Employment Web-based Certificate Series (April 6 - July 6 )

This online course provides an extensive overview of supported employment and how to facilitate competitive jobs for individuals with significant disabilities. Topics include:

  • Federal Policy and Overview Customer Profile
  • Marketing and Job Development
  • Job-Site Support
  • Special Topics
  • Long Term Supports & Funding.

Supported Competitive Employment for Individuals with Mental Illness (April 6 - July 9)

This online course provides an extensive overview of supported competitive employment for individuals with mental illness. Sessions will include these topics:

  • Employment Support

Customized Employment Webcourse!

Customized Employment - (April 20 - May 18, 2009)
This 4 week course covers the important topics in customized employment. Customized employment is a process for individualizing the employment relationship between a job seeker and an employer in ways that meet the needs of both. It is based on a match between the unique strengths, needs, and interests of the job candidate with a disability, and the identified business needs of the employer or self-employment. (Tuition is $60 per person.)

Self Employment CourseOverview of Self-Employment for Entrepreneurs (April 27 - May 31)

Self-employment is increasingly recognized as a viable employment option for people with disabilities. Self employment for individuals with disabilities involves minimizing the fears of the prospective business owner, as well as the rehabilitation and local small business development professionals who assist them. A person does not need to“get ready” to own a business, if a customized approach is used.

The course will cover these important topics on self-employment and more…

  • Strategies for Exploration & the Discovery Process
  • Writing a Business Plan
  • Conducting a Feasibility Study
  • Accessing Community Supports
  • Identifying Funding
  • Using Work Incentives
